Kamukunji police officer among four killed after heavy rains in Nairobi

Nairobi area Police Commander Adamson Bungei confirmed that the other victims including a bodaboda rider were swept by floods in Gigiri, Buruburu and Dagoretti areas.

A police officer and three other people are reported to have died in flash floods following Sunday night's heavy rains in various parts of Nairobi.

The male officer, attached to Kamukunji police station is believed to have been swept off into a sunken manhole while rescuing trapped families in the area.

Police said the officer identified as David Chesire had responded to a distress call to rescue a family that had been trapped in a flooded house.

"The family he was rescuing is safe but we are yet to recover his body, the search is still ongoing," an officer told The Eastleigh Voice.

Some of the sections of Nairobi that recorded flooding include some streets in Eastleigh and the Nairobi Expressway where motorists complained of being trapped in the waters on their way home.

The heavy downpour followed a warning by the Kenya Meteorological Department that heavy rains would hit Nairobi.

"Nairobi City County Rainfall Forecast: Moderate to heavy rainfall likely over several parts of the city. Stay prepared and stay safe!" warned the weatherman on Sunday.

There are fears that more Kenyans may have been trapped in the flood waters in various parts of the country.

The Kenya Red Cross has also shared the following safety tips to protect themselves and their loved ones from flooding hazards.
